Artists bluff is a great hike to pair with a ride on the cannon aerial tramway just a short drive away. Yet we hear the song of painted buntings emerging from treetops. At the stop sign go left, this takes you over the highway. Keep right at the first fork in the trail.
From the top of artist’s bluff’s ledges there is an excellent view over echo lake to cannon mountain’s front ski trails and down the narrow franconia notch. It was a nice cool down that was mostly flat. Do not park at trail head (no parking signs). Peabody slopes parking lot joins in here.
Dogs are also able to use this trail. Walking a mile and a half in chicago (15 or so blocks of paved midwestern flatness) is not the same! We walked around to see where it could be and with limited cellular signal, we couldn’t do much research. Loop over both peaks, with a link between the trailheads via the loop trail or a road walk on nh 18.
We parked at cannon mountain rv park and there was no sign to the trail head. The trail goes gently downhill and intersects with the trail that leads up to artist’s bluff. We parked across the street. After a bend in the trail, the park disappears from view. Alltrails/sarah hines the 1.5 mile loop trail quickly rewards you with absolutely stunning views, the kind you normally need to hike much farther for.
It came directly up from route 18, passed near both summits and descended to the gravel parking lot by our car. Instead, the trail turned sharply and ran parallel to the road until reaching the parking lot. Look for a dirt pull out on the right after the bridge; Bald mountain and artist bluff was exactly what i was looking for that morning:
Cannon mountain might be more famous for skiing and ice climbing but is also a gem in the fall season. A short ways in there is a trail juction, noted as tj1 above. We went after it hard rained and the trail was slippery. You need to go right at this junction for artist's bluff.
18, and then ascending steeply to artist's bluff, with wonderful views of lafayette and cannon ski area. artist bluff is a great trail to get great views of franconia notch with out hiking the notch itself. The trail starts here but please park at echo lake beach parking lot 100 yards ahead. There is a large parking area near the entrance to echo beach. Artist’s bluff is often talked about as an “easy” hike but mind you that’s on a white mountains scale. This was the old path to both artist's bluff and bald mountain. 18, a short ways off of rt 93. This is the perfect hike to find incredible views of the park and some amazing foliage in autumn.
